Honolulu- The Rainbow Wahine softball team (15-13) rallied to down the Eagles of Winthrop (17-14) in the night cap of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational Tournament day one, 3-2.
Melissa Coogan picked up the win in a complete game performance for her ninth win of the season.
Tracie Uchima went 3-3, hit a double to lead off the sixth inning, and later scored what proved to be the winning run.
The Eagles' Janiva Willis scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. After reaching safely on a base hit up the middle, Willis stole second, and later scored on ground ball hit by Kjerstie Johnson.
UH answered in the top of the second inning. Kate Robinson was hit-by-a-pitch with one out in the inning, stole second, moved to third on a base hit by Uchima, and scored on a wild pitch, knotting the score at 1-1.
Winthrop responded in the next half-inning with another run. Hilary Peacock had a one out single to center, then scored off of Stephanie Reid's double to the centerfield fence, thus tilting the lead back to the Eagles, 2-1.
But Hawaii again tied the score in the next half inning. Tara Harbert led the inning off with a walk; was pushed to second on a bunt by Denise Dahlberg which forced a throwing error by the Eagles' pitcher, allowing the speedy Harbert to score. That was all the scoring for both teams, until Uchima scored the final run in the top of the sixth.
For Winthrop, Kellie Johnson started the game and went 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on three walks, four hit-by-pitches, and six strikeouts. Jaqueline Trottier came in relief and shut the Rainbow Wahine down for the last 1.1 innings allowing only one hit while striking out one UH batter.
With the win, Head Coach Bob Coolen picked up his 499th win as the leader of the Hawaii softball program. His record at Hawaii stands at 499-324, and his career totals are 571-417 in 18 years. He was the head coach at Bentley of the Northeast-8 for five years before coming to Hawaii originally as an assistant to then head coach Rayla Allison. He took over the team in 1992 and hasn't looked back, taking the program to all of its NCAA Regional appearance, and winning the Big West Conference title in 1994 and capturing his first WAC title in 2003.
Hawaii now 1-0 in the tournament, will face the Eastern Illinois Panthers who are 0-1 after the first day of play.

Tokyo (T.W.C.P.E.) 5 vs. Winthrop 1
Winthrop (17-13) scored two in the top of the first and tacked on another three runs in the fifth to defeat Tokyo 5-1 in the fourth game of the tournament. Shahna Ashard threw a complete game, spacing seven hits, giving up one run with four walks and five strike outs.
The Eagles in the first inning had four hits. Janiva Willis led the game off with a single to left. Two batters later, Kjersti Johnson hit another single to left. Willis ended up scoring later on a wild pitch, and Kipisz was brought in by Lindsey Merriman on a single to left.
They extended their lead in the fifth to 5-0 when Merriman hit an RBI double to the centerfield fence, driving in Johnson, and later Stephanie Reid hit a single to left that scored Laura Hill who reached earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice.
Tokyo's Aya Ishida went 4-4 on the afternoon. She also drove in TWCPE's only run with a double to right-centerfield. Scoring on the play was Chisato Ogata who had gotten hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Winthrop is 1-0 in the tournament and Tokyo falls to 0-1.

Courtney Salmon threw a complete game shut-out in the third game of the day. It was Salmon scattered seven hits in her seventh complete game and third shut-out of the season.
In the third inning, after Torero pitcher Christina Haake had retired the first seven in a row, Leslie Macedo got a two-out single to left. Halle Popson followed with a base on balls, and Jackie Poggendorf whacked a double to left, scoring Haake for the first run of the game. In the fifth, the RedHawks added another run when Christine Bills was driven home by an infield hit by Popson.
Haake threw a complete game as well, giving up five hits, with one walk and three strike outs.

Miami is now 1-1 in the tournament, and San Diego is 0-1.

Loyola Marymount 5, Miami 3
Loyola Marymount (12-9) jumped in front of the Miami (8-13) in the top of the first inning and added runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. But the RedHawks fought back, rallying hard in the last three innings, but fell short, losing 5-3. In the last inning, Miami loaded the bases on three consecutive walks by two LMU different pitchers. They had the potential winning run at the plate, but were only able to push across one run on a fly ball and an error.
The RedHawks were led offensively by Bianca Paz who went 2-4; and Leslie Macedo who was 1-2 but scored two runs. On the mound, Jackie Poggendorf went the distance for Miami, giving up five runs on nine hits and four errors.
LMU's Danielle Kaminaka went 2-4 with a two-run home run; Lisa Abbott went 2-3 with one run scored and an RBI; Brittney Bassett hit a home run over the leftfield fence; and Kayla Meeks had a double to leftfield.
In the circle, after shutting-out Miami for the first four innings, Meeks was lifted for Samantha Lavino. Meeks went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with one walk and one strike out. A trio of Lavino, Krytal Kehr, and Tiffany Pagano pitched the last inning and two-thirds, with Pagano getting a save.
LMU is now 2-0 in the tournament, Miami is 0-1.

Eastern Illinois 2, Loyola Marymount 9
Loyola Marymount's Tracy Cook went 2-3 with two home-runs, two runs scored, and three RBI to drive the Lions past the Eastern Illinois Panthers (3-7). Tiffany Pagano and Samantha Lavino combined for the LMU win. Pagano went six innings, spacing nine hits, walking none, and striking out three. Lavino entered in the seventh inning and shut the door on the Panthers, striking out all three batters she faced to end the game.
The Panthers kept it close through the first five innings, but LMU pulled away in last three innings.
LMU scored first, Tracy Cook hit a two-run homer over the leftfield fence that scored Caylin Hornish who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
EIU came back to score two runs in the top of the fourth. Chelsea Adams and Robyn Mackie both scored after getting back-to-back infield singles to start off the inning

The Lions answered in the next half inning, tacking on two more runs to make the score 5-2 at the end of four innings. Brittany Basset led the inning off with a triple to right-centerfield, and later scored on a single by Jessica Grassi. Grassi later added the second run off a fielding error on the Panthers' second baseman. Loyola Marymount added one more run in the fifth of Cook's second home run, and extended their lead to 9-2 by the bottom of the sixth.
For the game, LMU had only Cook as a multiple-hit performer, but had several with extra base hits. Bassett had her triple in the fourth; Kayla Meeks hit a double down the leftfield line to lead off the sixth; and Margo Pineda had a two-run double to left and also scored a run.
Eastern Illinois leading hitters were Katy Steele who was 2-4; Chelsea Adams was 2-3 with a run scored; and Robyn Mackie was 2-3 with a run scored.
EIU is now 0-1 in the tourney, with LMU going to 1-0.
