HONOLULU - Two new Cooke Field records were set at the University of Hawai'i's All-Comers #6 meet this weekend. Freshman
Sabrina Reeve and sophomore
Patricia Gauthier posted new track records in the 3000m and pole vault, respectively.
Despite a rain soaked morning the Rainbow Wahine came ready to perform. The first Cooke Field record went down at the pole vault when Patricia Gauthier jumped an impressive 12ft (3.66m), a new school record. Gauthier broke UCLA's Chelsea Johnson's jump of 3.57m. She also held the previous school-record of 3.50m, set earlier this year.
"Considering where I am in my young pole vaulting career, I couldn't be happier," Gauthier said. "The rest of the year I will focus on fullfilling my place on the team, refining my runway speed and plant. I must learn not expect lifetime best every meet ... but I will sure try! If I do anything big this year it will be to get on a 14ft. pole."
Reeve bested the previous Cooke Field mark of 9:59.34 set by former Rainbow Wahine Victoria Chang in February 2003. The freshman cruised to a time of 9:54.51.
"My finish in the 3K helped build confidence for my 5K on the mainland," Reeve said. "It will give me the speed I need over the next 2 months."
In other action during the day, junior Tasha Monroe jumped 5.53m in the long jump, UH's top time this season. Freshman Meghan Weaver posted a season-high in the shot put (13.60m) and junior Novelle Murray threw a season-best 49.36m in the discus.
The Rainbow Wahine will be traveling to California next weekend to compete in
the Northridge and Occidental Invitationals, March 16-19. Among the meets are the Northridge Relays (March 18-19) and Long Beach Open (March 19).
