Hawai'i Defeats Jacksonville In Tourney's Final Game

Behind a complete game, seven strikeout effort by Shannon Tabion, the University of Hawaii softball team beat Jacksonville, 3-1, in the final game of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, Sunday afternoon, at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The win improved Hawaii’s record to 3-1.

Hawaii second baseman Noelle Izumi posted a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Ashley Ruff and Kristi Yoshizawa added one hit and one RBI each.

Yoshizawa got Hawaii on the board in the bottom of the second, following a Kate Robinson double with a single to right, bringing in Robinson and giving the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 lead. Hawaii would extend its lead in the third, as Izumi singled and worked her way to third on back-to-back wild pitches by Jacksonville’s Shannon Jensen. A Ruff single down the third baseline scored Izumi, and made the Hawaii margin 2-0.

Tabion faced some trouble in the fourth, as Jacksonville’s Stephanie Farabee reached base on an error, then came around to score on a Jenson single, cutting Hawaii’s lead to 2-1. However, Tabion got out of the inning striking out Lindsey Freitag, and only gave up one more hit over the final three innings. Hawaii added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to create the final margin.

No. 9 Washington 6, No. 14 Oregon 0 What started out as an early season Pac-10 showdown turned into a showcase for Washington pitcher Ashley Boek, who tossed a complete game shutout as the ninth-ranked Huskies earned a 6-0 victory over No. 14 Oregon.

Already leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Washington belted out three hits and took advantage of two Oregon errors to break the game open and take a 4-0 lead. That lead was more than enough for Boek, as she quieted Oregon’s bats, allowing only three hits while striking out six.

Seven different Huskies collected base hits, including catcher Kristen Rivera, who hit a solo homer in the sixth inning after being intentionally walked in her previous three at-bats.
