Tucson, Ariz. - The Rainbow Wahine lost to the No.2 Arizona Wildcats 4-0, this afternoon in the final day of the Worth Wildcat Invitational.
Arizona jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wildcat lead-off batter, Caitlin Lowe, tapped a looping fly ball over leftfielder Jennifer Hackett, and raced around the bags for a stand-up triple. Two batters later, Lowe scored on a wild pitch.
The Wildcats added to the lead in the third inning when Callista Balko hit a two-out, three-run homerun just inside the third baseline foul pole.
In the fourth inning, Jessica Morton took over for Shannon Tabion and held Arizona scoreless for the last three innings.
The Rainbow Wahine battled in the top of the sixth. Tara Harbert drew a walk to lead-off the inning. Tracie UchimaNoelle Izumi to load the bases with no outs. Mowatt was lifted, and Alicia Hollowell came in to squelch the fire, getting a pop-up, a strike-out swinging, and a flyball to leftfield to end the inning.
Mowatt (3-0), was the winning pitcher for Arizona. She struck out eight Rainbow Wahine, spaced three hits, and walked two. Hollowell picked-up her second save for her relief work in the final two innings. Tabion (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs, on four hits, with three walks, and one strikeout. Morton's final line reads as three innings pitched, giving up one hit, one walk, while striking out two.
Hawai'i will take on Arizona again in the second game of a double header today. Originally, Northern Iowa was going to play Arizona, but because of flight schedules, UNI declined to play their last game and Hawai'i agreed to play a double-dip.
