The University of Hawai'i softball team lost it's first game of the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic today to Oklahoma State, 3-0. Cowgirl pitcher Marjorie Johnson shut-out the Rainbow Wahine, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 16 UH batters.
The scoring started in the top of the second inning. Cowgirl Ashlyn Watson drove a line shot up the middle to scoring Courtney Totte, who had walked earlier in the inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Totte hit a high-fly ball over the centerfield fence, driving in Jenni Killman from first base. That was all of the runs scored for either side.
Hawai'i's senior rightfielder Tracie Uchima got Hawai'I's two hits, including one double in the bottom of the sixth inning to left centerfield. Senior Melissa Coogan got the start against the Cowgirls. She allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking two. Fellow senior Shannon Tabion finished the last inning and two-thirds on the mound for the Rainbow Wahine, striking out four out of the seven batters she faced.
For Oklahoma State, their freshman pitcher Johnson deftly mixed her pitches and speeds to baffle the Hawai'I offense. She threw a complete-game, shut-out.
Hawai'i's next game in the tournament is against the BYU Cougars of the Mountain West Conference.
