Phillips Claims Second Place at UH Heptathlon Invitational

Sunset Series Meet #3 Results

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field squad completed Day 2 of the UH Heptathlon Invitational at Cooke Field tonight. It was mixed in with the third Sunset Series Meet.

The top UH finisher in the heptathlon was junior Lana Phillips who completed the two-day event in second place with a total of 3931 points. Phillips jumped up four spots tonight scoring very consistent numbers in the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run.

Phillips was in sixth place after the day one with 2,236 points. Phillips leap-frogged over the only two other UH teammates to make a bid for first.

Sophmore Amanda Page placed sixth with a total of 3,645 points, while freshman Patricia Gauthier was seventh accummulating 3,573 points among the nine competitors in the grueling two-day event.

Page came into Day 2 in fifth place with 2,259 points, while Gauthier was the highest Rainbow Wahine point gathering in Day 1 with 2,371 points in third place.

Jessica Massicotte claimed the top spot with a two-day total of 4,166 points, followed by Phillips, Mylene Brosseau (3,925), Annick Barragangana (3,811), and Julie Christine Cabban (3,774) to round out the Top 5.

Also, taking place tonight was the Sunset Series Meet #3. It was the last chance for the women's track team to have a competitive meet prior to choosing the squad that will represent UH at the upcoming Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Houston (Rice University) May 12-15.

"We tried to fine tune some things out here tonight," head coach Carmyn James said. "We are pretty set with the roster that is going to make the trip to the WAC, but we did have a chance to see a few of the girls who are "on the bubble" to give us one last look before we make our final selections tomorrow (Thursday)."
