SUNRIVER, Ore.--University of Hawai`i senior
Matt Kodama shot his final 18 holes of collegiate golf, as he finished tied for 48th place in the NCAA Men's Golf West Regional. Kodama posted a four-over-par 76 in the final round to give him a three-day total of 224 at the Sunriver Resort-Crosswater golf course.
Top-seeded UCLA won their second straight West Regional Championship after overtaking New Mexico late in the final round with a six-over-par 294. The Bruins finished one stroke ahead of the Lobos with a three-round total of 865. UCLA's Travis Johnson and Arizona's Chris Nallen split the individual title after they both shot par 72s in the final round. UNLV's Ryan Moore and UTEP's Chris Baryla earned tickets to the NCAA Finals by finishing as the top two individuals from non-qualifying teams.
Despite falling short of qualifying for the NCAA Finals, Kodama capped a stellar UH career in Oregon. Kodama paved the road to the regionals with a victory in the Ping Cougar Classic, eight top ten finishes earlier this season and a spot on the All-WAC first team. Not to mention averaging a one-under-par 71 before the West Regional.
Kodama was one of six golfers selected to compete from non-qualifying squads at the Regional hosted by the University of Portland. Ten teams and the top two individuals from non-qualifying teams advanced from the regional to the NCAA Finals to be hosted by Virginia Tech, June 1-4, at the Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs, Va.
