Uchima First Team All-WAC

UH Has Four Selected to Second Team

HONOLULU - University of Hawai`i outfielder Tracie Uchima today was selected to the 2004 All-Western Athletic Conference first team voted on by WAC coaches. Uchima was the only first team pick, however, UH did place four players on the second team.

Uchima, who was a first team pick in 2003, started in right field and hit in the leadoff spot in all of UH's 61 games. The junior batted .322 (28-for-87) in the 24 WAC games with three doubles, a triple, seven RBI, and 10 runs. The native of Torrance, Calif., had the highest on-base percentage (.352) among the UH starters.

Denise Dahlberg led a quartet of Rainbow Wahine on the second team. This is the third-straight year the catcher from Chandler, Ariz., has been honored on one of the all-WAC teams. As a freshman, Dahlberg was a first-team outfielder, while garnering second team honors behind the plate last season. She is joined by teammates first baseman Tyleen Tausaga, second baseman Noelle Izumi, and third baseman April Crowell.

Tausaga is one of only three freshmen named to one of the two teams along with Fresno State's Nichole Willis (WAC Freshman of the Year) and Rachel Donaldson. Izumi is receiving her first recognition on the list, while Crowell was a second team selection last season.

Fresno State, who won the WAC title, placed three on the first team, including WAC Player of the Year Christina Clark and WAC Pitcher of the Year Jamie Southern. FSU's Willis was Freshman of the Year, while Tulsa's Jamie Pinkerton was the WAC Coach of the Year.

Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, and Tulsa led the league with three players each on the all-WAC first team. UH and Nevada both placed one player each. There were six players on the first team that were either first or second team honorees in 2003. There was a tie for first team catcher and a tie for second team outfield.

Hawai`i led all schools with four second team selections. Tulsa added three, Fresno State two, and both Louisiana Tech and San Jose State had one each on the second team.
