Heptathlon Results
HOUSTON - Hawai`i athletes turned in six personal bests following the third day of the 2004 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine got through the first full day of running and field events after seeing action postponed yesterday in the second day of the heptathlon because of inclement weather.
Lana Phillips, who was in 12th place following the first day of the heptathlon with 2,309 points, moved up three spots just missing scoring by one point finishing with 3,972.
UH's other two heptathletes - Page and Patricia Gauthier - came in 10th and 12th place, respectively.
Page ended the heptathlon with 3,959 points, which was a personal best by 82 points, while Gauthier gathered 3,652.
Only three athletes picked up points today -- Jenny Bell (10,000m run), Tasha Monroe (long jump), and Kelsey Smith (javelin).
Bell timed in at 39 minutes and 7.23 seconds; Monroe leaped to a mark of 5.76m; and Smith tossed the javelin 42.57m, a new personal best for her.
Distance runners Dana Buchanan and Kelly Young had solid showings today in the 800m and 1500m runs.
Young made the finals in both events with a time in the 800m (2:10.08) and her first-ever time in the 1500m (4:40.81). Buchanan qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 1500m run (4:40.15).
Other personal bests were turned in by Jessica Rohr in the 400m hurdles (1:04.36) and Sheena Thain in the 800m run (2:24.06).
Nevada leads the women's division with 63 points followed by Boise State (60), Rice (55), Louisiana Tech (40), SMU (33), UTEP (26), Fresno State (24), Tulsa (8), and Hawaii (3).
Provided the weather conditions stay fair, the final day of the championships is scheduled to get underway with the hammer throw finals.
