RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai`i split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with Nevada today at Idlewild Park, as UH scored six times in the top of the seventh to win the first game, 9-3, only to drop the nightcap, 3-1.
UH's Melissa Coogan (9-14) went the distance in game one striking out one and spacing seven hits and allowing three earned runs.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the scoring in the first inning as Tracie Uchima led off with a single but was forced at second on Denise Dahlberg's fielder's choice. April Crowell's double drove home Dahlberg from first. Following a strikeout, Ashley Ruff then hit and RBI single scoring Crowell.
Nevada closed the gap to one in the bottom of the first when Stacy Mueller doubled and came home on Jiliane Hartfiel's RBI single.
UH added a run in the third on Crowell's third home run of the season. Nevada's Judith van Kampen (9-8) departed after facing two batters in the third for reliever Tiffany Hoeft who went the rest of the way.
The Wolf Pack posted single runs in the fourth and sixth innings on a homer by Hartfiel and a wild pitch, respectively.
Hawai`i sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring six times on six hits. The big blows in the inning were Tyleen Tausaga's two-run homer and a two-run triple by Amanda Garza.
The second game saw Nevada jump out to a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer from Cindy Elkins in the second and a solo shot by Candice Rainwater in the third.
The lead held up until the seventh inning when UH finally got on the board. Noelle Izumi hit a one-out double, moved to third on a fly out, and scored on Paula Blanning's single to cap the scoring. Nevada's Rainwater (10-7) picked up the complete-game victory striking out two and giving up five hits.
UH's Shannon Tabion (14-9) suffered the setback in game two lasting only 2.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Blanning came on in the third and went the rest of the way scattering four hits.
Hawai`i now stands at 24-27 on the spring and 6-8 in WAC play. Nevada is 30-24 and 5-7.
The two teams take Friday off before completing the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m HST.
