HONOLULU - Hawai`i pitchers Melissa Coogan and Shannon Tabion threw complete-game shutouts while getting plenty of run support from four home runs in the twinbill en route to 6-0 and 10-0 Western Athletic Conference victories over UTEP at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
In the second game, Tabion (13-6) tossed her second no-hitter of the season, blanking the Miners. Tabion lost a chance at her second perfect game of the season when, in the fourth inning, she threw leadoff batter Laura Joiner's come-backer away at first base. She struckout seven on the night.
UH got early run support with a five-spot on the board in the first inning aided by a three-run homer by Denise Dahlberg and a two-run shot by Ashley Ruff.
Hawai`i (20-19) added two more in the third and three more in the fourth to win the game via the 8-run mercy rule.
In the first game of the day, Coogan (7-10) spaced two hits over seven innings with six stikeouts and two walks.
UH again scored early with three in the first and three more in the second.
In the first inning, April Crowell belted a three-run homer to center, her first of two round-trippers on the night. In the second, UH tacked on three more by a bases loaded walk to Noelle Izumi, a sacrifice fly by Dahlberg, and the final run on a run-down play.
UTEP's (7-27, 0-4 WAC) starters Renee DiPuccio (6-13) and Veronica Flournoy (1-5) suffered the losses for the Miners.
The two teams finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m. at RWSS.
