CLAREMONT, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team competed today in the Pomon-Pitzer Invitational and produced some strong individual showings, including one school record at the Robert Strehle Track, on the campus of Pomona-Pitzer College.
Freshman Kelly Young broke a 21-year-old school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.47. She placed fourth overall among the 71 runners and became the fifth UH athlete to qualify for the NCAA West Regional. The old record was held by Patricia Duboux (2:08.04) posted July 29, 1983. Teammate Dana Buchanan also set a personal best in the event hitting the finish line at 2:09.70 in sixth place. Buchanan also had a solid fourth-place finish in the 1500m run (4:31.13).
Jessica Rohr boasted the third fastest UH all-time mark in the 400m hurdles crossing the finish line in 1:04.84.
Kelsey Smith captured second place in the javelin with a toss of 42.19m (138-05), surpassing her career-best by more than two meters. Monica Su surpassed her career-best in the 3,000m Steeplechase (11:42.79). Su placed fourth in the event. Eva Tanner passed her personal best in the pole vault (3.20m / 10-06) good enough for second on the UH all-time list. She took fourth in the meet. Novelle Murray also bettered her career-best in the discus with a toss of 49.00m (160-09). Jenn Bell's time of 37:47.15 in the 10,000m run was seventh best at the meet and ranks her seventh on the all-time UH list.
