HONOLULU - Chris Campos launched a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to lift Oregon State (10-3) over The Citadel, 3-2, in the semifinal game of the First Hawai`i Rainbow Baseball Tournament at Les Murakami stadium.
The Citadel (4-6) scored in the bottom of the first when second baseman Jon Aughey led off with a double to left field and crossed the plate off a RBI single by Josh Stackey. The Bulldogs got a second run when first baseman Chip Cannon hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.
But the Beavers came out swinging in the eighth. Citadel starter Jonathan Ellis was pulled after giving up two hits, including a double to Mike Lissman. Shannon Sprouse entered in relief, but surrendered the homer to Campos and therefore suffered the loss to even his record to 1-1 on the season.
The Citadel played without head coach Fred Jordan who was forced to sit out a second game due to Southern Conference rule after getting tossed in last night's game against Hawai`i.
Oregon State starter Jake Postlewait went 6.1 innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs, but Kevin Gunderson earned the win with one inning of work, and gave up one hit and struck out one in five batters faced.
The Beavers advance to the championship game and will meet the winner of tonight's game between Hawai`i and Chicago State. The Citadel will play for third place against tonight's loser.
