PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i softball team split its first two games today in the Stanford Classic beating Illinois, 4-0, in the first game and dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 10 Stanford in the nightcap.

In the first game, UH's Shannon Tabion (12-5) blanked the Illini (18-10-1) over 7-innings with one strikeout and three walks. The junior from Wailuku, Maui (Baldwin H.S.), allowed only two hits -- a leadoff single in the first and another single in the fifth.

The Rainbow Wahine scored early and often posting a two spot in the first inning and single runs in the second and third.

Tracie Uchima led off the game with a single through the right side of the infield and moved to second on Noelle Izumi's bunt single. Both runners moved up on Denise Dahlberg's sacrifice bunt and scored on Tyleen Tausaga's 2-run single to right.

In the second inning, Uchima hit a RBI double in the second to drive home Marie Jackson. In the third, Dahlberg walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Ashley Ruff's single to left to cap the scoring.

Illinois' Sherri Taylor (5-5) suffered the loss going only two innings allowing three earned runs. She was relieved by Megan Huitink who went the final five frames allowing one run with four strikeouts and two walks.

In the nightcap, Hawai`i (17-17) was edged by the host Stanford Cardinal, 1-0. UH's Melissa Coogan (5-9) suffered the loss going all the way scattering five hits while striking out five and walking a pair.

The only run in the game for the Cardinal (23-7) came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coogan retired the first two batters she faced before giving up three consecutive singles by Jessica Allister, Meghan Sickler, and Leah Nelson to provide Cardinal starter Dana Sorensen (13-4) all the offensive support she would need. Sorensen struckout 15 batters and did not walk anyone. She allowed only two hits -- a leadoff single to Uchima in the first and an infield single to Justina Kahaku in the sixth.

Hawai`i is scheduled to play two more games in the tournament Saturday beginning with the make-up game with Brigham Young at 10 a.m. PT (8 a.m HT) followed by a game with UC Riverside at noon PT (10 a.m HT).
