HONOLULU - Hawai`i got a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to squeak by Tokyo W.C.P.E, 5-4, in the first game of the night, while they dropped a 1-0 decision in the nightcap to Northwestern to split its two games tonight in the Hawai`i Invitational at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UH is now 2-1 in the tourney.
In the first game, UH starter Paula Blanning went the distance striking out three and walking four while scattering seven hits en route.
Tokyo started the game with Kanako Mizukami, who lasted only 2.1 innings before Yuko Nakamura came on in the third and went the rest of the way suffering the loss.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Justina Kahaku came on as a pinch-runner for April Crowell and took second base using the International Tie-Breaking procedures. Following a walk to Tyleen Tausaga, Stacey Ritter's bunt attempt was too hard towards first who fired a strike over to third to force Kahaku. Alana Power then sharply singled to left moving up everyone one base. Kea Yamaguchi then took four straight pitched out of the strike zone to force home Tausaga with the game winner.
In the second game, Shannon Tabion (11-4) suffered the setback going the distance striking out eight and walking only one. But Northwestern's Eileen Canney (7-1) limited the UH offense to only a mere single after going the first 6.2 innings hitless.
Northwestern (14-4) got its only run in the top of the sixth inning when Sheila McCorkle led off with a single to short, moved to second on a wild pitch, and on to third on Carri Leto's infield single out in front of the plate. Leto then tried to steal second and Denise Dahlberg's throw sailed into center field to allow McCorkle to trot home.
UH is 16-15 overall and 2-1 in the tournament, while Tokyo falls to 1-2 and Northwestern is 2-0.
