Rainbow Warriors Break Five Records in Day 3 of NIC Championships

Hawai`i Closes Gap on SMU Going into Final Day of NIC

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The University of Hawai'i men's swimming and diving squad is a very close second place after Day 3 of the National Independent Conference Championships held at the Oakland University Aquatics Complex.

SMU leads the championships with 617 points followed by the Rainbow Warriors with 589. Rounding out the remaining participating teams are Oakland (328), Denver (313), and Florida Atlantic (266) on the men's side.

It was a big day for many of the UH swimmers, including sophomore Andrew Affleck who set a new school record in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of three minutes and 50.12 seconds. He breaks teammate Kurt Boehm's old mark of 3:54.18 set in 2002.

Sophomore Peter Thew broke his own mark in the 200 Free (1:35.90) taking first place and making a NCAA automatic qualifying time. He and teammate Andrew Coupland (1:39.66) place 1-2 in the event.

Four-time All-American Cheyne Bloch broke his old school record in the 100 Breast (53.76) picking up another NCAA automatic qualifying time. UH went 1-2-3 in the 100 Breast as teammates Chad Thomsen (54.43) and Tudor Ignat (54.52) followed Bloch.

It was Thew again breaking another one of his records in the 100 Back (47.51) posting first place in the event.

The UH tandem of Michael Gowdy (320.75) and Jonathan Coyle (301.10) finished second and third, respectively, in 1-meter diving.

The final record broke by UH on the day came in the 400 Medley Relay with the foursome of Thew, Bloch, Nimrod Palma, and Boehm touching the wall at 3 minutes, 13.88 seconds.

The final day of competition concludes on Saturday with the prelims at 11 a.m. and the finals at finishing at 6:30 p.m.
