HONOLULU - Hawai`i men's swimmer Hugo (Reyes) Duran is participating on the Uruguay National Team this week at the World Swimming Championships in Indianapolis. The 25-meter short course event is being held at the Conseco Fieldhouse, Oct. 7-11.

UH assistant swimming coaches JiaLin Sun and Chris Mooney are accompaning Duran to the event.

The World Championships is the most prestigious and largest international swimming event outside of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games this year. This is the first time a FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) World Swimming Championship is taking place in the United States.

Duran, a senior from Las Palmas, Spain, has dual citizenship and has qualified to swim three events at the meet, including the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle.

"We're very excited and proud that a member of the Rainbow Warriors is representing us at this prestigious event," head swimming coach Mike Anderson said. "It is also very thrilling that Hugo is representing his National Team."
