BOISE, Idaho - The No. 3 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (20-0, 10-0 WAC) survived the Boise State Broncos (16-8, 5-5) 26-30, 33-31, 30-18 and 30-25 in front of a mostly pro-Hawai`i crowd of 1,127 at Bronco Gym Friday.
This was the second-straight match for the Rainbow Wahine without head coach Dave Shoji, who stayed back from the road trip to be with his father, who is ill. Associate Head Coach Charlie Wade served as the head coach for both matches.
Victoria Prince had a big match for the Rainbow Wahine, putting up 20 kills, eight blocks and two aces while hitting .412. Kanoe Kamana`o came up with 57 assists, 10 digs and five blocks while Susie Boogaard had 25 kills, 16 digs and four blocks. Alicia Arnott added 13 kills and 11 digs while Tara Hittle came up with 10 kills and a .600 hitting percentage in just three games. Ashley Watanabe had 22 digs in the back row, while Juliana Sanders came off the bench to put up seven kills and two blocks.
Boise State went on an early four-point run early in the first game to go up 6-4, before a 8-3 UH run made it 14-11 in favor of the Rainbow Wahine. But then the Broncos went on their run, firing off a 10-4, taking the 21-18 lead. Boise State continued to lead the rest of the way, taking game one 30-26.
That fired up Hawai`i, as they came out and ran off a five-point run, capped by two blocks and a kill by Prince, making it 5-1 UH. But the Broncos wouldn't go away and they used an 8-4 spurt to take the lead at 11-10. But then Boogaard led a 7-1 UH run, scoring four of the seven Hawai`i points in the run, giving the Rainbow Wahine the 17-12 advantage. The two teams traded small runs with UH holding on to their 22-17 edge, before Boise State reeled off six-straight points to get the lead back at 23-22. Prince put UH up 28-25 with an overpass kill before four-straight Bronco points gave Boise State game point at 29-28. Hawai`i was able to fight it off, then get their first game point, on a block by Kamana`o and Prince, at 30-29. The Broncos fought off two game points until a kill by Sanders gave the Rainbow Wahine the 33-31 game two victory.
Hawai`i then started to take control in the third game as they ran off a big 16-5 run in the middle bfore they ran off an 8-2 spurt to take the game 30-18.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the fourth game 8-3 and never really looked back. Boise State would pull within two on a few occasions before three-straight points put it away for Hawai`i, 30-25.
UH will now head back to the islands for a three-match homestand, starting with a Nov. 5 match vs. Fresno State at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
