NCAA West Regional Results - Day 1
PALO ALTO, CALIF. - University of Hawai'i track & field runners
Hanna Bremler and
Victoria Chang competed today at the first day of the 2003 NCAA Outdoor West Regionals taking place at Cobb Track & Angell Field on the campus of Stanford University.
Bremler was the first to compete of the four Rainbow Wahine that qualified for the meet. She did not qualify for Saturday's finals, as she placed 14th overall with a time of 4:36.68. Only the Top 12 made it to tomorrow's finals.
The freshman from Tyreso, Sweden, qualfied in the 1500 meter run (4:29.98) at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
In the 5000 meter run finals, Chang was among the leaders in the first few laps but dropped back down the stretch, finishing in 20th place with a time of 17:41.83 - almost one minute off her spring best time.
"Victoria was a little disappointed with her performance, but all in all it wasn't bad since she had not competed in track since high school, as she set out her first two years at Stanford," UH head coach Carmyn James said.
Chang qualified for the West Regional posting the Western Athletic Conference's second fastest time of 16:45.15 in the 5000m run at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 18.
Tomorrow, both Olivia Smoody and Novelle Murray participate in the high jump and discus events, respectively. Smoody is ranked seventh in the WAC while Murray is third.
