HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i split its final home doubleheader this afternoon at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium with San Jose State, winning the first game 4-0 and losing the second, 2-1 in eight innings.
In game one, UH got on the scoreboard in the second inning as senior Kate Judd clobbered a 1-1 pitch deep over the centerfield fence, her third of the season.
UH tacked on another run in the third off SJSU starter Kelli McCollister (4-13) as Tracie Uchima reached on a 1-out single off McCollister's leg, went to second on Denise Dahlberg's single through the left side, and scored on Stacey Porter's single up the middle.
McCollister departed in the fifth after giving up a leadoff single to Uchima. Reliever Courtney Lewis retired the first two batters she faced before surrendering a two-run blast to right center by Porter, her 12th of the season.
Melissa Coogan (26-9) allowed three hits - a double to Miranda Gonzales in the fifth, a single to Becca Baldridge in the sixth, and a single to Heather Lopez in the seventh.
In the second game, Shannon Tabion (5-7) suffered the loss in the circle going the distance for the Rainbow Wahine.
UH again got on the board first as Porter smashed the first pitch of the fourth inning off SJSU starter Carol Forbes (15-14) to deep right center to put UH on top. It was the first hit off Forbes in the game to that point.
The Spartans tied the game in the fifth as Courtney Lewis led off with a double to center field, moved to third on Shannon Henderson's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Carlie Hill's single through the left side.
The game stayed tied until the eighth when Baldridge hit a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to give SJSU the 2-1 margin of victory.
Hawai`i now stands at 32-17 on the season and 13-3 and maintaining its lead in the Western Athletic Conference. San Jose State now stands at 22-32 and 4-10.
UH plays its final regular-season games next week on the road. The Rainbow Wahine play a non-conference doubleheader at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., before ending the trip at Louisiana Tech for back-to-back doubleheaders May 2-3.
