Coogan Pitches UH to Sweep of Spartans

HONOLULU - Melissa Coogan tossed back-to-back complete games as Hawai`i swept visiting San Jose State in a pair of Western Athletic Conference softball games tonight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium by scores of 4-0 and 6-1.

Coogan (25-9), who pitched her fourth doubleheader in a day this year, scattered seven hits in the 14 innings of work and did not allow an earned run.

In game one, Coogan threw a 2-hitter as UH used a 4-run outburst in the fourth inning off SJSU starter Carol Forbes (15-14).

Tracie Uchima led of with a double to right center. After Denise Dahlberg struckout, April Crowell singled up the middle to score Uchima from second. Hannah Butler then came in to run for Crowell and moved to second on Stacey Porter's single. After a double steal and a walk to Trisha Ramos, Marie Jackson singled to left to drive in two. The final run of the inning came when Ramos and Jackson pulled the double steal and SJSU catcher Megan Delgado threw the ball into right field to score Ramos.

In game two, UH tacked on three runs in the second off SJSU's Kelli McCollister (4-12) and added another three in the sixth before Courtney Lewis recorded the final two outs.

In the second, Porter led off with her 11th home run of the season to center field. Kate Judd singled to right and Jackson reached on a bunt single to the mound. A throwing error by SJSU second baseman off the bat of Justina Kahaku scored Judd. With runners at first and third, Jackson stole home.

SJSU picked up its only run in the fourth as Veronica Ramos singled to left center and moved up to second on Becca Baldridge's sacrifice bunt. Ramos rounded the bag at second and tried to advance to third and ran into Judd. Interference put Ramos at third as she scored on an error by UH third baseman Trisha Ramos on pinch-hitter Heather Lopez's grounder.

Hawai`i improves to 31-16 overall and 12-2 in the WAC, while San Jose State falls to 21-32 and 3-9.

The two teams play another doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
