Rainbow Wahine Sweep Wolf Pack

Coogan Tosses Back-to-Back Complete Games to Pace UH

HONOLULU - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Melissa Coogan tossed back-to-back 7-inning complete games as Hawai`i opened its home Western Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Nevada, winning 3-0 and 3-1 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Coogan (18-9) shutout the Wolf Pack over the course of two days, as the games were slated for yesterday, but severe lightning halted the first game in the bottom of the third inning of a scoreless contest. Coogan spaced six hits while striking out six and walking one.

The game resumed today as UH put up three runs in the sixth inning off Candice Rainwater (6-7) to win 3-0.

In the sixth inning, back-to-back singles by April Crowell and Stacey Porter put runners at first and second. But Kate Judd hit into a fielder's choice forcing Crowell at third. Trisha Ramos then sliced a double to right center to drive home both Porter and Judd. Ramos then came home on a single by Marie Jackson to right center to cap the scoring in game one.

In the nightcap, Coogan limited Nevada to three hits, but one was a solo homer by Lindsey Hall to left field in the fifth for the Wolf Pack's only run. Coogan struck out five and walked one, as she pitched her second doubleheader of the season.

Robyn Ford-Feitz (6-9) suffered the loss allowing eight hits and three runs in 3.1 innings. She did not strike out a batter and walked one. She was relieved by Judith van Kampen in the fourth, who went the final 2.2 innings scattering three hits and striking out five.

UH scored a pair of runs in the first inning Tracie Uchima led off with a single to short, but was forced at second on Denise Dahlberg's fielder's choice. After Crowell flied out to right, Porter then tripled down the right field off the wall scoring Dahlberg. Porter came home on a wild pitch.

The Rainbow Wahine added an insurance run in the fourth as Justina Kahaku reached on a one-out single up the middle. Kahaku moved to second on Uchima's single to left center. Ford-Feitz was then lifted for van Kampen who promptly gave up a single up the middle to Dahlberg to load the bases. Crowell then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Kahaku.

Hawai`i improves to 23-16 overall and 4-2 in the WAC. Nevada falls to 17-22 and 1-5.

The two teams complete the four-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. at the RWSS.
