GREENSBORO, NC - Hawai`i's
Melissa Coogan tossed a no-hitter in the first game and
April Crowell powered two home runs, including a grand slam to earn the Rainbow Wahine a split at North Carolina-Greensboro today in a none-conference doubleheader.
The Rainbow Wahine (19-14) clobbered nine hits en route to a 10-0 victory in game one as Coogan notched her first-ever collegiate no-hitter as the game was shortened due to the 8-run rule in college softball.
Crowell hit a grand slam propelling the squad, while teammate Denise Dahlberg went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Tracie Uchima , who was hitless in two at-bats, also added two RBI.
"April (Crowell) hit one of the longest home runs ever in this park, she really crushed it," head coach Bob Coolen said. "We came out in the second game and just threw our gloves out there and thought we were going to cruise."
In game two, UH jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Crowell's solo shot in the first, her ninth dinger of the season.
UNCG then tied the score in the third inning on Jennifer Hubbard's solo homer.
UH added a three spot on the board in the fourth as Stacey Porter led off with a solo homer, her career 28th, one shy of the UH career mark. Kate Judd then doubled and scored on Trisha Ramos' single. Ramos advanced to second on an error, moved to third on Ashley Ruff's sacrifice bunt, and scored when Marie Jackson was caught in a rundown.
UNCG added two runs in the sixth as the Spartans' Penny Thompson doubled, before advancing to third on Jennifer Moran's single. Joni Gomez doubled home Thompson, while Amber Watson followed up with an RBI ground out to first base to bring home pinch-runner Ashley Purcell.
UH's Shannon Tabion went 5.1 innings and did not factor into the decision. She allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out seven and walking two. Coogan (15-9) suffered the loss in relief going one inning allowing two hits and two runs while walking two.
The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the seventh as Melissa Johnson singled, moved to second on a walk to Jennifer Aguilar. Stephanie Witte then came in at second as a pinch-runner, before a walk to Kim Benningfield loaded the bases. Thompson then singled up the middle to drive home both Witt and Aguilar to give UNCG the 5-4 come-from-behind win.
Hawai`i now heads to the West Coast to begin Western Athletic Conferenc play with back-to-back doubleheaders at Fresno State April 4-5.
