Rainbow Wahine Sweep Two Games in Malihini Tourney

HONOLULU - Patience was a virtue tonight for the University of Hawai`i softball team as it captured its first two games in the Malihini Tournament in the second day of the four-day event at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UH clubbed Loyola Marymount, 9-2, in its first game and then scored five times in the sixth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit to beat Baylor, 5-2, in the nightcap.

Melissa Coogan tossed the complete-game gem in the opener as she gave up two runs and eight hits while striking out four and walking one. She got some much needed offense from teammates April Crowell (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Kate Judd (3-for-4, RBI, 2 runs).

LMU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Lisa Abbott tripled to right center and scored on Casie Phillips single to right.

UH got to LMU starter Krystal Kehr for nine runs and 14 of its 15 hits. Sami Strinz came on and got the final three outs for the Lions.

In the second game, UH starter Shannon Tabion battled for seven strong innings scattering six hits and allowing the only two runs off solo, back-to-back homers from Baylor's Kelly Osburn and Sarah Caudle in the fourth inning.

UH couldn't muster anything off Bear starter Christen Vitek until the sixth inning.

Noelle Izumi got things started with a leadoff single to left center. She advanced to third on Crowell's double to left center. Both runners then came home on back-to-back balks by reliever Joni Miller to tie the game at two.

That's when the flood gates opened as Stacey Porter singled, Judd doubled, and Trisha Ramos was beaned to load the bases. Everyone moved up one base on Denise Dahlberg's RBI single to second. And then the big blow came from Marie Jackson's two-run single down the right field line to cap the scoring.

UH improved to 11-7 overall and 2-0 in the Malihini Tournament. UH plays in the 6 and 8 p.m. games Saturday night against UC Riverside and Kent State, respectively.
