Rainbow Wahine Sweep Two More in Malihini Tournament

HONOLULU - Hawai`i pitcher Melissa Coogan posted two wins tonight on the mound for the Rainbow Wahine as she pitched a complete-game against UC Riverside and went three innings of relief versus Kent State to propell UH to a 4-0 mark in the Malihini Tournament tonight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UH's win over UC Riverside gave 12th year Head Coach Bob Coolen his 500th career victory, too.

In the first game, Coogan spaced six hits against the Highlanders as April Crowell and Denise Dahlberg hit solo homers to provide some punch offensively.

Stacey Porter doubled to center in the second inning and came home on Trisha Ramos' single through the right side of the infield. Ramos scored on Marie Jackson's double to right center field to make it 2-0.

UH would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Dahlberg's and Crowell's homers, respectively.

UC Riverside got its only run in the sixth on an RBI double by Jessica Black.

UH's Coolen also hit a milestone with the win claiming his 500th career coaching victory -- 72 at Bentley College and the other 428 at UH.

The second game had some drama.

UH scored six times in the top of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and cruise on to victory.

Justina Kahaku was placed at second base as the International Tie-breaking runner. She moved over to third on Dahlberg's sacrifice bunt, and scored on a dropped put-up to KSU's second baseman. When the smoke cleared, UH had posted six runs on three hits -- the big blow was a two-run double to left center by Dahlberg to drive home Stacey Porter and Kate Judd.

Shannon Tabion started the game for UH and faced one batter in the sixth when Coogan came in the game.

UH enters the final day of the Malihini Tournament as the only undefeated team at 4-0. UH pushed its overall mark to 13-7 on the season with the two wins tonight.
