HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team lost twice this afternoon in the Hawai`i Invitational at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The losses places them in the 9 a.m. consolation game Sunday against No. 16 Ohio State.
In their first game of the day against No. 16 Ohio State, UH was shutout 4-0 by Buckeye hurler Katie Chain (6-4).
Chain limited the Rainbow Wahine to seven hits while striking out 11.
Melissa Coogan (13-6) took the loss allowing nine hits while striking out two and walking one. Of the four runs given up by Coogan, only one was earned as errors plagues UH for the second day in a row.
The trio of Noelle Izumi, Stacey Porter, and Kate Judd each collected two hits apiece, while Tracie Uchima got the final one.
In the second game against the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education, Hawai`i was shutdown until the seventh inning by pitcher Kanako Mizukami, as the Japanese hurler notched eight strike outs and one walk.
UH was trailing 3-0 until the seventh inning when Porter got aboard on a single and Trisha Ramos delivered a two-run blast deep over the left field fence to close the gap to one.
Tokyo picked up two runs in the first off UH's Shannon Tabion. Tokyo's Sayaka Fujikawa had the hot bat hitting a double and driving in two runs.
UH's record falls to 16-12 overall and 2-3 in the tourney.
