Rainbow Wahine in Fourth at end of WAC Championships, Roberts named Diver of the Year

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - At the end of the four-day 2003 Western Athletic Conference Championships at Palo Alto College Natatorium, the University of Hawai`i women's swimming and diving squad finish in fourth with 487.5 points. Southern Methodist University won the title with 1006.6 points, followed by Nevada with 659 and Rice with 506.5.

The final day of competition got underway with the 1650 Free, in which freshman Jessica Affleck swam strong to finish second with a time of 16:44.85. Affleck's time earned her a NCAA "B" qualifying standard and relinquished her previous school record of 16:51.89. Junior Shannon Stoddard followed, finishing 13th with a mark of 17:59.85, beating her personal best.

In the 200 Back, junior YingJuan Zhen notched the second slot with a 1:59.68 while surpassing her previous school record and earning a NCAA "B" qualifying time.

Senior Morgan Hoesterey and junior Michelle Vos outshined their previous best times in the 100 Free while earning points. Hoesterey finished 10th at 53.09 and Vos clocked in at 54.29, putting her in 13th.

In the 200 Breast, freshman Katie Clewett beat her previous season-best time when she touched the wall at 2:19.36, a fifth place finish.

Sophomore Yan Chen earned the new UH school record and an NCAA "B" qualifying time after her excellent finishing time of 1:59.80 in the 200 Fly.

In the platform diving event, sophomore Maggie Roberts captured first and a season-best score of 388.90. Junior Jenalin Miller surpassed her previous best with her score of 299.65, placing her in eighth.

The UH relay team "A" of Chen, Affleck, Vos, and Zhen finished fourth in the 400 Free Relay (3:28.96).

The 2003 WAC Diver-of-the-Year Award was presented to Roberts at the conclusion of the competition. This marks the second consecutive year that Roberts has been honored with the title.

Upon returning home, the Rainbow Wahine prepare for the Last Chance Meet where they have a final chance to qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The event is slated for March 7 at 6 p.m. and March 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
