SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving squad kept a firm grip on fourth place today, at the third day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Palo Alto College Natatorium.
The day got underway with the 400 IM, where sophomore Yan Chen had a spectacular swim, as she captured second (4:15.01), while earning an NCAA automatic qualifying time and surpassing her previous school record of 4:19.54.
Jessica Affleck clocked in a 10th place with her (1:53.52) finish in the 200 Free. She was followed by teammates Jessica Nohara (1:54.60) and Shannon Stoddard (1:57.24).
Morgan Hoesterey received an NCAA "B" standard qualifying time in the 100 Breast. Hoesterey's finishing time of 1:03.60 put her in fourth place. Teammate Katie Clewett followed behind her in fifth, clocking in at 1:04.05.
YingJuan Zhen had a tremendous swim in the 100 Back, as she notched the top spot (54.96) and received an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Zhen also set a new school record in the event, surpassing former UH swimmer Renate DuPlessis' time of 55.79, set in 2001.
UH diver Maggie Roberts scored 492.95 in the 3-meter event, placing her in second. She placed third in the 1-meter the day before.
The UH "A" relay team of Zhen, Clewett, Chen, and Hoesterey captured first place in the 400 Medley Relay, as they finished with a time of 3:47.46.
The fourth and final day of competition resumes tomorrow, with the preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and the finals at 6:30 p.m.
