Youthful Rainbow Wahine Squad Closes Out Season at NCAA West Regional

GRESHAM, Ore. - A very young University of Hawai`i women's cross country team closed out the 2003 season this afternoon placing 22nd at the NCAA West Regional.

The field of 31 teams and 207 women competitors ran a 6,000-meter course at Blue Lake Park in Gresham, Ore., just outside of Portland.

Stanford won the women's title for the fifth straight year with 45 points. The Cardinal was followed by UCLA (69), Washington (94), Arizona State (112), and UC Santa Barbara (175) to round out the Top 5 team standings.

This was the first 6K race of the season for the Rainbow Wahine.

Dana Buchanan, a freshman from Ontario, Canada, led the Rainbow Wahine posting a time of 22 minutes and 45 seconds in 90th place. Buchanan has been the top UH finisher in each of the last four races.

The other four scorers for UH were Robin McRobbie (123rd, 23:11), Chantelle Laan (136th, 23:25), Kelly Young (161st, 24:05), and Heidi Frank (24:09).

The Rainbow Wahine had a total of seven runners compete this afternoon with Sheena Thain (177th, 24:18) and Monica Su (195th, 25:02) not factoring in the scoring.

Four Western Athletic Conference teams competed in the race. Fresno State was 18th (498) and Boise State 19th (509) edged UH in 22nd (665), while the Rainbow Wahine were ahead of San Jose State in 24th (672).
