HONOLULU- The University of Hawai`i and eight other schools participated in the second and final day of the Rainbow Invitational at the Aileen Soule Classic today, held at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. Though the meet was not scored, it gave the teams a chance to train, as well as improve individual top times.
Andrew Affleck, who just joined the squad, had a spectacular day as he flew to a top finish in the 1000 Free (9:14.90). Affleck holds the season-best time in the event and trails the school record by just five seconds. Affleck also shined in the 500 Free (4:33.94), finishing second among the 24 participants. He has the second best time of the season in the event.
Peter Thew, who is ranked 11th on Taper & Shave's College Top 50 in the 200 Free had a strong day as he notched the top finish (1:41.57) among the 39 swimmers.
Katie Clewitt holds the season-best time in the 200 Breast (2:25.11). She finished the event third out of 20. Yan Chen finished in the lead in the 200 Back, hitting the wall at 2:04.27.
Nimrod Palma had the sixth best time of the season in the 200 Free (1:47.73). Lance Fujioka currently stands with the fifth best time in the 200 Back (2:08.64) and Mike Shedlt holds the fourth best time of the season in the 200 Fly (2:09.34).
Jessica Affleck turned in individual highlights at today's meet, starting her day by swimming to a second place finish in the 1000 Free (10:10.47), a season-best time. Affleck earned the fourth best time of the season in the 200 Free (1:56.43) and the second best in the 500 Free (5:02.37).
Relay events were held at the beginning and end of today's meet. The Rainbow Wahine finished third of 11 teams in the 400 Medley Relay (4:01.94) and fourth among 12 in the 400 Free Relay (3:42.11). The Rainbows had a fifth place finish (3:29.76) among 17 teams in the 400 Medley Relay and finished fourth out of 16 in the 400 Free Relay (3:09.72).
The Hawai`i Diving Invitational is scheduled for Jan. 7-8, starting at 9 a.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. Dual meets resume Jan. 10, when both the men's and women's teams face off against Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
