HONOLULU- The University of Hawai`i men's and women's swimming teams were among 15 schools highlighted today at the Duke Kahanamoku Sprint Meet. The teams had a chance to strengthen their skills, as well as improve their individual top times for the season on the first day of the non-scored Rainbow Invitational.
The day got underway with the Women's 200 Medley Relay, with 20 relay teams participating. The Rainbow Wahine A team finished fifth (1:48.37), surpassing their season best time of 1:51.64, set Nov. 1 at the Big West Shootout.
The Rainbow men's relay squad also fared well finishing fourth (1:31.76) of 31 teams who swam in the event and earned their third best time of the season.
Newcomer Katie Clewitt showed her skills in her debut today as she swam to a third place finish in the 100 Breast, touching the wall at 1:05.60. Clewitt, an Australian native, now holds the individual best time of the season in the event. She then went on to finish second among the 21 swimmers in the 50 Breast (30.62).
Andrew Affleck, also new to the squad, had the fifth best time of the season in the 100 Free (1:44.34).
Tudor Ignat, ranked 14th in Taper & Shave's College Top 50 in the 100 Breast, had a strong showing today as he clocked in a time of 57.13, finishing third of 32 swimmers.
John Pearce, a transfer from Auburn had a strong showing and now stands sixth in the 50 Free (21.75) and fifth in the 100 Free (47.44).
YingJuan Zhen finished second of 24 participants in the 50 Back (27.16), breaking her former record of 27.73, set Nov. 1 at the Big West Shootout. Zhen also had a strong finish in the 100 Back (58.18), touching the wall fourth among the 37 swimmers.
Jaclyn Rosen beat her previous season-best in the 100 Back (1:00.56) by 1/100 of a second.
Cheyne Bloch surpassed his personal best time of 51.52 in the 100 Fly, set Oct. 11 at the Hawaiian Senior Meet. Bloch finished fourth of 46, clocking in at 40.11.
Yan Chen had the sole top finish of the day as she clocked in at 58.06 in the 100 IM. Chen was among 23 participants who swam in the event. She also posted the fifth best 50 Free time of the season (25.02).
UH participates in the second day of the Rainbow Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Hawai`i Diving Invitational follows up the Aileen Soule Classic, slated for Jan. 7-8.
