Shanghai Opens Outrigger Invitational With Sweep of Ball State

HONOLULU - Shanghai Oriental rode the hot-hitting of Shen Qiong, Tang Miao and Wang ZhiTeng to sail past 2002 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association champion Ball State, 30-24, 30-21, 30-26,o the 9th Annual Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Qiong, an outside hitter from the Chinese National Team, hit .586 with a match-high 19 kills in 29 swings to pace the Shanghai offense. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker opened the contest with four kills in game one, exploded for seven kills in the second game, and then put-down eight more in the third game.

Miao, also a member of the Team China, recorded 15 kills in the victory, including eight in the first game. The 6-foot-8 opposite finished the contests with just three attacking errors in 28 swings for a .429 clip.

ZhiTeng came to life in game two, slamming down eight kills in as many swings to register a perfect, 1.000 attack percentage in the game. ZhiTeng began the night slowly, with just one swing in game one. On the night, ZhiTeng hit a match-high .714, with one attack error in 14 total swings.

Ball State was led offensively by Josh Zudeima and Jary Delgado, who chipped in 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Zudeima, a 6-foot-3 senior, led the Cardinals with in kills, hitting .556 in the process. Zudeima entered the match in game two and became one of Ball State's top attack options almost immediately.

Delgado, a junior from Carolina, Puerto Rico, played only in games one and three, recording five kills and then six kills.

Ball State setter Evan Berg took over the reigns of the offense in game two and proceeded to lead the Cardinals to a .294 attack percentage after they had struggled to a .133 clip in game one. Ball State enjoyed its best statistical game in game three, when they hit .312 with Berg still at setter.

Shanghai faces Penn State in Friday's early match, while Ball State will meet host Hawaii in the late contest. Action is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
