UH's Smith Captures First in 5,000-Meter Run at Oxy Invite

WALNUT, CALIF. - University of Hawai`i's Cheryl Smith took home first place in the 5,000-meter run at the Occidental College Invitational Saturday.

Smith, who was a cross country All-American, posted a time of 17:14.54 beating the second-place runner by 33 seconds. Teammates Teryn Bentley, who had a personal best by 10 second, placed 8th with a time of 19:10.39 while Sara Verga came in at 19:36.25 for 12th place.

Other notables were Casey McGuire-Turcotte and Alethe West finishing third and fourth, respectively, with times of 4:35.58 and 4:36.19 in the 1,500-meter run.

In the 100-meter high hurdles, Lana Phillips set a personal best by sprinting a 16.17 (-0.7w) finishing in fourth place ahead of teammates Sadie Martin (17.27) and Kira Lee (18.02).

The Rainbow Wahine will now prepare for the Western Athletic Conference Championships May 15-18 in Houston.
