KAHUKU, HI – Norman Ganin-Asao shot a team-best 69 to help the University of Hawaii men’s golf team move into eighth place Thursday at the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships at Turtle Bay Resort’s Fazio Course.

Ganon-Asao, playing in his last tournament as a Warrior, is tied for 13th with three other players.

“Norman started out with three birdies right off the bat,” Hawaii Head Coach Ronn Miyashiro said. “He struggled a little again today on the back, but eagled the fourth hole and pared-out the rest of the way. It was a good round for him.”

Jaime Matsumura finished the round at one-over at 73, while Kellen Floyd Asao and Matt Kodama followed with 75s. Kramer Aoki was a stroke behind at 76. Overall, the Warriors are at 593, one stroke out of the two-way tie for sixth place.

“We improved a little score-wise,” Miyashiro said. “Hopefully, it starts a trend for tomorrow. Realistically, our goal is to finish in top five, and we’re 11 strokes back so we have our work cut out for us.”

Tulsa leads after two rounds with a score of 557. Fresno State is second at 572, followed by SMU (573), UTEP (575), and Nevada (582).

Tulsa’s David Inglis held-on to his lead by carding a 66. He leads the tournament by 12 strokes with 18 holes to play. SMU’s Ryan Abbate and Tulsa’s Bill Lowry are tied for second (141).

The tournament concludes tomorrow. Shotgun start is scheduled for 7 a.m.
