EAGLE ROCK, CALIF. – The University of Hawai`i women’s track team competed in the Occidental College Multi Events and Distance Carnival over the past two days and did exceptionally well in the distance events.
In the women’s heptathlon, Sadie Martin, Lana Phillips, and Kira Lee finished 11th, 13th, and 14th, respectively. It was the first time ever participating in the event for all three UH members.
In the 800-meter run, UH’s Natalie Kolodziej took second with a time of 2:18.91, just missing the top spot by 1 ½ seconds. Teammates Carolyn Berger (2:22.70, 6th), Diane Kohara (2:26.71, 11th), Shayne Enright (2:26.97, 12th), and Ashley Quinn (2:28.54, 15th) also placed in the Top 16.
It was a clean sweep of the Top 3 spots in the 1,500-meter run. UH cross country All-American Cheryl Smith won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:39.65 followed in second place by UH senior Casey McGuire-Turcotte (4:42.46) and just seven seconds behind her in third was Alethe West (4:49.30). It was UH’s strongest showing in the Carnival.
Sara Verga placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:41.08. Also, Berger (12:42.21), Quinn (12:58.93), and Enright (13:15.65) finished in the three through five spots in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase.
The final event for the UH was the combined men’s and women’s 10,000-meter run with Jennifer Crumley having a strong showing finishing 19th overall and the third woman to cross the line at 39:46.19. Both Teryn Bentley and Brittany Keith were the next two women finishers with times of 40:44.81 and 41:05.56, respectively.
UH is competing in the Long Beach State Track Classic later today.
