TEMPE, ARIZ. - The University of Hawai`i softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at No. 8 Arizona State today by the scores of 3-1 and 5-2.
Hawai`i (9-8) lost the first game, 3-1, as UH's Sheri Ornonz (5-3) went the distance scattering five hits and allowing only two earned runs while striking out two and walking one.
ASU's Erica Beach (10-2) went five innings while Kirsten Voak went the final two frames notching her first save of the season.
UH center fielder/designated player Trisha Ramos was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Ramos is coming off an injury to her finger during the Chevron Paradise Classic. Right fielder Denise Dahlberg also contributed two hits in four at-bats.
ASU took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a couple of singles and an error.
UH tied the game in the third when Kate Judd singled to center after one out. After Stacey Porter fouled out, back-to-back singles by Dahlberg and Crowell scored Judd.
But the Sun Devils came back in the bottom of the third when Jennifer Forner walked, advanced to second on Nichole Thompson's single, then both runners moved up on the sacrifice bunt by Kristin Farber. Phelan Wright got an RBI bunt single to score Forner as Kara Brun followed with an RBI on a groundout to short to cap the scoring.
In the nightcap, ASU won 5-2. UH's Melissa Coogan (3-3) lasted only three innings giving up single runs in the first, second, and third frames. UH reliever Shannon Tabion was touched up for two runs in her 1.1 innings, while Paula Blanning one hit ASU over the final 1.2 innings.
ASU's Kristen Swetel got the start but was lifted after going only 3.2 innings as reliever Kirsten Voak (5-2) picked up the win going the final 3.1 innings of no-hit ball.
UH's Kate Judd went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as she hit her third home run of the season in the fourth. Denise Dahlberg added a solo shot two batters later for the scoring for UH.
Hawai`i falls to 9-8 overall while Arizona State improves to 16-4. The Rainbow Wahine head to Tucson, Ariz., for the UofA Hillenbrand Invitational March 1-3.
