On the post-game fracas last Saturday night...
"It's unfortunate it happened, but it wasn't our fault. Our kids showed great restraint. They were punched twice before they reacted. I'm proud of them. It's unfortunate that it came to that. They're (Cincinnati) frustrated. They came a long way and lost a game they wanted to win, but we've all seen that same call the one when (UH quarterback)
Shawn Withy-Allen (incomplete pass ruled a fumble), two weeks ago, we didn't get the call and we still won. When you play on the road you have to overcome things. They're lucky we didn't catch the ball another three times or it would've been a blowout., that's the way I look at it. They're lucky they got out 20-19. When you're undisciplined, you lose games. They (Cincinnati) are undisciplined. They came out of the locker room talking to our players, jawing with them. Number 85 and 24 were unbelievable. I've never heard guys like that before. So they got what they deserved...a loss. They weren't able to close out Ohio State the same way. In fact, I hope they come over here and play us again."
On the complaints from Cincinnati for UH to "clean it up" in game management...
"I would say that we need to win games. And they (Cincinnati) need to win games and not worry about us and worry about themselves."
On the complaints from Cincinnati regarding people on the sideline...
"I think they're referring more to the people sitting behind their bench, which is the home field advantage. The boosters don't go to their sideline half the time anyway. They're not the ones saying things, it's the people in the stands and we deal with that every time we go on the road. I'm disappointed they (Cincinnati) got things thrown at them, I thought that was inappropriate, so don't get me wrong. But as far as the game time part of it, I mean, that's part of the game. We've been through it and go through al the time. Let them go to Fresno State and see how they do."
On any ramifications resulting from the Saturday night fracas...
"None that I'm aware of, but I would anticipate that our athletic director (Herman Frazier) will not buckle. We won't change. I talked to him after the game and he was there, I mean, he watched it and he knows what happened. He said the same thing I did at the time. Herman is at all our games. He stands on the sidelines. He sees the same thing. I told our players that whet happened after the game we can't have happen. How would you feel if two of our players couldn't play this week because they broke their hands punching somebody, you know, that's kind of stupid. But like I said, we showed good restraint during the game. I even addressed it before the game because of the trash that they (Cincinnati) were talking before the game. I could tell that was going to incite some things to happen during the game and you just can't play stupid football. We said let's just win the game because that's all that matters and let them say whatever they're going to say. The kids did a great job of that."
On himself not getting involved in the fracas...
"My stance was at midfield watching. I didn't want to get in there because if I took one bump, I would've went down. I can't balance anymore after my wreck. Plus, every time I thought about going in there it looked like it was over and then it would start up again. I saw all the coaches down there and felt like they had it under control and I wasn't going to help anymore."
On the play starting quarterback Timmy Chang was injured...
"I thought the (Cincinnati) guy was playing hard. I thought he could've avoided it, but he was trying to do his job and unfortunately he went low. He was not blocked into it, but he was out of control."
On the status of starting quarterback Timmy Chang...
"I think his knee will probably allow him to play this week because he is walking. But his thumb (right/throwing that was injured on the same play) is really swollen (sprained) and that concerns me more than his knee."
On the impact of the UH fans in the 20-19 win against Cincinnati...
"I think the people of Hawaii have been conditioned over the years to cheer for defensive football because that's how Hawaii has won. This is the first time in the last four years we're winning playing wide-open offense and the few times that we've had to play defensive football to win the game, the crowd had been unbelievable. You think about the games where it's been wild. The natural rivalry against BYU and the Fresno State games as well. When (UH linebacker) Chris Brown intercepted that ball, it was a different crowd. To be quite honest, the crowd really won that game for us. They were the 12-man, and they're going to be there this week to, so it's going to be fun."
On the success of the Warrior defense and coordinator Kevin Lempa ...
"I give him a lot of credit. He's a people guy. The players respond to him. He made the adjustments he needed to make to play good defense in what we did against Rice and this past game. We won the game defensively against their offenses. We got it done on defense."
On this week's game against Alabama...
"They're really, really good. That's a concern."
