Rainbow Wahine Swimmers Notch First Two Dual Meet Wins at Big West Shootout

IRVINE, CALIF. - The University of Hawai`i women's swimming team picked up two dual meet wins this afternoon at the final day of the Big West Shootout at the UC Irvine Anteater Pool.

In the consolation course, UH took on Cal Poly-SLO, UC Irvine, and Cal State Northridge.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-4) clicked against Cal Poly-SLO defeating the Mustangs, 74-34, picking up the team's first dual meet victory of the season, and then squeaked by the Matadors,63-49. However, UH dropped a decision against the host Anteaters, 62-50.

Individually, UH rebounded with a much stronger team effort today. UH picked up individual wins in the 50 Free, 200 IM, 200 Fly, 200 Back, 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Yan Chen and YingJuan Zhen notched two wins apiece. Chen, a sophomore, won the 200 IM (2:04.44) and 200 Fly (2:07.54), while Zhen, a junior, led all swimmers in the 50 Free (24.54) and 200 Back (2:06.19).

Diver Maggie Roberts was back in form again on the springboard as she won both the 1- and 3-meter events. In the 3-meter, she nailed dive after dive totaling 305.15, to give her a NCAA Zone Qualifying score. Teammates Victorya Moreno finished third with 221.00 points and Jenalin Miller was fifth at 203.00.

Michelle Vos turned in some of her best times of the weekend with a second-place showing in the 50 Free (25.35) and a third-place finish in the 100 Free (55.11).

Jessica Nohara fared well in both the 200 Free (1:57.25) placing third and the 500 Free (5:19.32) touching the wall in seventh.

Shannon Stoddard was the only UH entry in the 1000 Free (10:55.19) posting a fifth-place finish.

Morgan Swinburne placed sixth in the 100 Free (56.73) and seventh in the 200 Free (2:03.21).

The Rainbow Wahine have next week off before hosting UC Santa Barbara Nov. 15 and 16 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
