West Regional Women's Results
PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The University of Hawai`i women's cross country team placed 9th at the NCAA West Regional in Palo Alto, Calif., today.
Hawai`i finished with a team score of 326 as host Stanford literally ran away with the meet posting a total of 24 points.
UH junior Victoria Chang led the Rainbow Wahine this morning as she crossed in 12th place overall with a time of 21 minutes and 51 seconds.
"I don't feel that I did all that great today, but my teammates did really well," Chang said. "We all got out quickly and held the pace throughout the entire race."
Teams were comprised of seven runners. The other four scorers for the Rainbow Wahine were Hanna Bremler (35th, 22:39), Jennifer Crumley (69th, 23:26), Robin McRobbie (102nd, 24:07), Teryn Bentley (116th, 24:19). Jodi Enomoto and Carin Patterson were the two non-scorers for UH finishing 145th (24:59) and 148th (25:07).
Stanford's Alicia Craig won the meet with a time of 20:39.
"It was a great team effort by our ladies this morning," head coach Carmyn James said. "They went out on fire and kept up a good pace the entire way as each runner topped her own personal best 6K time. I was very pleased with our effort out here today."
UH's ninth-place team finish is the highest finish at the NCAA Regional, surpassing last year's 10th place showing.
Furthermore, UH was among four Western Athletic Conference teams participating at the West Regional, including Boise State, San Jose State, and Fresno State.
Hawai`i was the top finisher among the WAC teams at Stanford as Boise State finished 20th (531 points), followed by San Jose State in 24th (607) and Fresno State. The Bulldogs didn't receive a team score since they had one lone runner.
Possible good news also for UH's Chang. Even though UH did not qualify as a team for the NCAA Championships next week, Chang may qualify as an at-large individual. She learns on Monday, Nov. 18, whether or not she is selected.
The NCAA committee selects 38 individuals, the first four from each region that is not part of the Top 2 qualifying teams. Also, each at-large selection must have finished in the Top 25 in their region.
The NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship is November 25 at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center Lavern Bigson Championship Course, Terre Haute, Ind. The women's race is slated for noon.
