HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine swimming and diving team dropped a home meet tonight to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 181-105, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
The Gauchos jumped out to a 28-2 lead after two events and never looked back.
Before the meet ever began, UH lost its long-distance specialist Shannon Stoddard to a kidney infection and hence didn't have a swimmer in the 1000 Free.
A surprise for the Rainbow Wahine tonight was Rebekah Olsen who placed second in the 50 Free (24.35) and won the 100 Free (52.24). Olsen is a transfer from the University of Florida and is coming back from off-season hip surgery. Tonight was her first meet of the season.
UH's Yan Chen was nosed out in the 100 Back (56.78) losing by a nose, but she turned it around winning the 200 IM (2:05.06).
The divers were unchallenged on the women's side as 2001 Western Athletic Conference co-Diver of the Year Maggie Roberts led UH in both the 1-meter (273.83) and 3-meter (313.13) events.
The two teams meet again Saturday morning at the DKAC with a 10 a.m. start.
