Big West Shootout - Day 1 Results

IRVINE, CALIF. - The University of Hawai`i women's swimming team dropped a pair of dual meets this afternoon and fell into the consolation course on the final day of the Big West Shootout at UC Irvine tomorrow.

UH dropped its meet to a strong Washington squad, 104-32, and to UNLV, 89-49.

Despite being a very young team, it was a very good off-island learning experience for the ladies.

Diving was the highlight of the afternoon for the Rainbow Wahine. Co-Western Athletic Conference Diver-of-the-Year Maggie Roberts took top billing in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.

Roberts posted a 254.20 in the 1-meter event. Teammate Victorya Moreno took third overall with a total of 205.50, followed in fifth place by Jenalin Miller's 181.55. In the 3-meter event, Roberts against prevailed with a 266.30. Teammates Moreno and Miller both finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with scores of 207.50 and 193.55.

Yan Chen had the most productive day for UH among the swimmers posting a win in the 400 IM (4:23.35), while placing second in the 500 Free (4:59.02), and third in the 200 Free (1:51.35).

Also, personal bests were turned in by Morgan Swinburne in the 100 Free (56.05) and Jaclyn Rosen in the 100 Back (1:00.91).

This was also a first opportunity for Mallory Socha and Amanda Birch to utilize new techniques they have been working on in the butterfly events.

The Rainbow Wahine compete in the consolation course tomorrow against Cal Poly-SLO, Cal State Northridge, and host UC Irvine.
