HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's swimming team defeated the University of Pacific Saturday night 195-92, while the Rainbow Wahine fell to the Lady Tigers, 171-113, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center on the UH Campus. Also, UH divers Maggie Roberts and Mike Gowdy nailed NCAA Zone Qualifying scores in both the 1- and 3-meter events.
In the diving events, Roberts posted a total of 273-45 points in the 1-meter event for first place honors. UH's Victorya Moreno and Jenalin Miller had scores of 245.25 and 214.80, respectively. In the 3-meter, it was Roberts again taking top honors with a score of 301.15, followed by Moreno (234.20) and Miller (200.56). UOP does not have diving.
In the men's diving, Gowdy was very strong nailing dives as he boasted scores of 330.075 in the 1-meter, while posting a 349.60 score in the 3-meter event. Both scores were well above the NCAA standards for qualifying. Jonathan Coyle, UH's only other diver on the squad, posted scores of 273.45 in the 1-meter and 270.90 in the 3-meter events.
On the swimming side for the men, Kurt Boehm, Peter Thew, Tudor Ignat, Nimrod Palma, and Cheyne Bloch came up big in their respective events.
Boehm won the two longest events - the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle races. He posted a time of 4:42.64 in the 500, and a 9:45.01 in the 1,000. Thew won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 50.59 seconds in the 100 and 1:52.01 in the 200. Ignat posted winning times in the 100 breaststroke (56.08) and the 200 (2:03.35). Palma had wins in both the 100 (50.57) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.89) events. Bloch picked up top points in the 50 (20.96) and 100-yard freestyle (45.62).
On the women's side, the two new Chinese newcomers - Yan Chen and YingJuan Zhen - shined in their debut.
Chen notched wins in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.25 and in the 200-yard individual medley hitting the wall at 2:04.72. Likewise, Zhen picked up top points in the 100-yard backstroke with a first-place time of 57.49, and came in first in the 50-yard freestyle at 24.64.
