HONOLULU -- The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (13-0, 3-0 WAC) defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurrican (16-6, 1-3 WAC) 30-20, 30-15 and 30-12 in front of a crowd of 6,830 at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday night.
Kim Willoughby and Lily Kahumoku led the way for UH with 14 kills each. Willoughby also added 11 digs and hit .480 while Kahumoku had nine digs. Middle hitters Karin Lundqvist and Lauren Duggins also played well, as Lundqvist had nine kills and four blocks while hitting .438 and Duggins added eight kills, six digs and three blocks while hitting .400. Jennifer Carey also played well at the net, adding 20 assists and four blocks.
Tulsa played UH tough early on, keeping the Rainbow Wahine to just a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Hawai`i went on a couple of mini-runs to extend the lead to 22-13 and 27-18 before finishing out game one 30-20. The Rainbow Wahine had 20 kills in the first game, all coming from their left sides (Willoughby - 7, Kahumoku - 6) and middles (Duggins - 4, Lundqvist - 3).
The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 4-0 start in the second game before Hawai`i put together a 16-3 run to go up 16-7 to force a Tulsa timeout. Then they kept rolling, as they were up 25-15 before Duggins put together five straight points on serve, including one ace, to give the Rainbow Wahine the 30-15 win in game 2.
The teams again battled early in game three before Duggins put together another string of serves, serving nine straight to put Hawai`i up 21-8. Tulsa kept fighting, cutting the lead to 24-12 before Kahumoku served the last six points as Willoughby ended the night with a kill to give UH the 30-12 game three win.
Hawai`i now heads on their first road trip of the season, as they will play UTEP on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and Southern Methodist on Oct. 19 at 11 a.m., both times local to site. After returning from the road, UH will have a quick turnaround before they face off with Big East power Notre Dame on consecutive nights (Oct. 21 and 22) at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Oct. 21 match will start at 7 p.m. and the Oct. 22 match will be at 6 p.m.
