Team & Individual Results
SAN DIEGO - Victoria Chang showed some old life this morning as she captured first place overall at the UC San Diego Triton Classic in San Diego. The University of Hawai`i got a complete team effort finishing in third place behind nationally ranked teams.
Chang ran a solid 21 minute and 46.7 second 6K to better teammate Hanna Bremler, who took second overall in the Division I race with a time of 22 minutes and 10.8 seconds. Both Chang and Bremler have come in No. 1 and 2 for UH in every race that they competed.
There were a total of 29 teams and 271 runners, 11 Division I and 102 runners, on a 68-degree morning with overcast skies and no wind.
"Victoria ran very comfortably after the first mile," Associate Coach Andy McInnis said from his hotel room in San Diego. "It was a great confidence builder not only for her but for the team as well since it was our first 6K race of the season."
Not only did Chang and Bremler do well, but UH got a spark from Alethe West. The junior Ausie came in third for UH and 28th overall with her best 6K time of her career posting a 23:41.5.
The other two scorers for the Rainbow Wahine were Jennifer Crumley, who crossed the finish line in 1.5 seconds behind West in 29th place with a time of 23:42.0, and Teryn Bentley, who posted a time of 24:15.1 and placed 42nd.
UCLA, who is nationally ranked, took first place with 57 points followed by UC Irvine with 78. Hawai`i ended up in third with 101 points, followed by Western Athletic Conference foe Nevada with 102 and USC with 136 to round out the Top 5.
UH has fared very well in races involving WAC opponents this season.
"Things are going well and we are seeing potential of doing something special at the WAC Championships in Dallas in three weeks," McInnis said. "The girls are starting to smell blood, and I think it'll show in the next three weeks."
Head Coach Carmyn James was away recruiting in Puerto Rico this weekend.
The final regular-season meet of the season is next Saturday, October 19, as UH hosts the UH Cross Country Sprint Series #1 at the U.S. Marine Corps Base's Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The races get underway at 7:30 a.m.
