Dubrovin Qualifies for NCAAs, Seniors Say ‘Aloha’

HONOLULU – The meet began with a good-bye the Hawai‘i’s 11 seniors at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Huskies overpowered the Rainbows, today, at the last dual-meet of the season. Washington men earned 163.5 points versus UH’s 130.5 points. The women lost with 78 points to Washington’s total of 208. Junior and newcomer Konstantin Dubrovin still triumphed in the 200 freestyle, earning a “B” standard qualifying time that could earn him a ticket to the NCAA Championship.

Graduating women seniors included co-captain Star Carter, co-captain Georgi Kinsela, Candice Cabebe, Sanja Du Plessis, Sarah Shepard, and Brandie Smith. The Rainbows said farewell to Co-captain Niklas Larsson, co-captain Raymond O’Donnell, Anders Jonsson, Dave Skudin, and Eddie Stevens.

Dubrovin earned an NCAA “B” standard qualifying time with his first place finish in the 200 free. He went on to win the closest race of the meet, the 500 free, with a time of 4:33.32. Dubrovin also earned second place in the 100 free with a time of 46.34 seconds. Bill Rollins finished second in the 100 back, earning the team’s fastest time of the season with 52.40 seconds. Cheyne Bloch led the lanes again, winning the 100 breast with 55.88 seconds. Tudor Ignat clocked in behind him with his best time with Hawai‘i with 56.67 seconds and still holds the second fastest time behind Bloch. Kurt Boehm shaved .56 seconds off his best time with his first place finish in the 200 fly with 1:51.16. Boehm also finished second in the 200 IM with Ignat behind for third. Nimrod Palma finished less than a second behind him in second place with 1:52.06. Anders Jonsson earned the fastest team time of the season in the 200 back with his third place time of 1:58.17.

Morgan Hoesterey finished second in the 100 breast with 1:05.00, shy of her team top time. Katia Sarakatsani clocked in second with 52.69 and now holds the team’s fastest season time. She went on to win the 200 IM and earned the top team spot with 2:06.68.

Hawai‘i competes in their last meet before conference championships at a Senior Circuit at the DKAC, Friday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m.
