SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A three-goal flurry within the first 20 minutes of play propelled Sacramento State to a 4-1 victory over the Rainbow Wahine today in a non-conference match at Hornets Soccer Field.
The Hornets, who had lost earlier in the year to Hawaii, 2-1 in overtime at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, jumped out of the gates when Lisa Wrightsman scored her first of three goals on the day at the 4:48 mark. Wrightsman collected a long, high bounding punt by CSUS keeper Amy Seely, and broke-away from the final Wahine defender to beat keeper Erin Chow.
The Hornets scored again just two minutes later, when Stacey Roswell scored off a direct kick from about 25 yards out. Sacramento State scored again at the 20-minute mark, when Wrightsman finished off a deflection of her own shot.
The Wahine re-grouped at the intermission, and scored their first goal of the game courtesy of senior striker Jennifer Starsiak, who took a Taryn Murata pass and sent a shot inside the far post at 77:25. The goal tied Starsiak for the school’s all-time lead, with 15, and also extended her UH record for career points to 39.
Sacramento State finalized the game’s scoring at 84:05, when Wrightsman completed her hat trick by beating Chow with an unassisted score.
Hawaii dropped to 3-4-0 on the season despite solid efforts from midfielders Joelle Sugai, Sasha Araya-Schraner, and defenders Kristalynn Ontai and Liz Lusk.
The Wahine wrap their three-game, four day road trip tomorrow, with a match against No. 6 California, in Berkley, Calif.
