HONOLULU -- University of Hawai'i Warrior wide receiver
Ashley Lelie (6-3, 187, Jr., Honolulu) earned third-team All-America honors, according to a press release from Football News today.
"Ashley is certainly deserving of All-America honors," Hawai'i Head Coach June Jones said. "He's a great kid who has worked hard for everything he has accomplished. He's our big play guy and any team that plays us needs to account for him on every down. Any award for him is an award for the entire team."
Lelie, the first UH player since 1992 to earn All-America honors (PK, Jason Elam), is having an outstanding season for the Warriors. Last week, the Radford High School graduate had six catches for a career-high 211 yards and three touchdowns to help the Warriors defeat Miami-Ohio, 52-51.
Lelie currently leads the Western Athletic Conference and is fifth in the nation in receiving yards per game (116.6) and also averages 6.7 catches per game. He is 72 yards shy of becoming the school's all-time leading receiver with 2,794 career yards on 177 receptions.
Lelie is also the only receiver in UH history to catch for 1,000 yards in two separate seasons in his career (1,110 in 2000 and 1,166 in 2001). In 10 games this season, Lelie leads the Warriors in receiving and all-purpose yards with 67 catches for 1,166 yards and 14 touchdowns.
He is one of three players from the WAC who earned All-America honors from Football News. Fresno State quarterback David Carr and defensive lineman Alan Harper both earned second-team honors.
