HONOLULU—Harvard captured the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) North American Team Race Championships today in the waters off Keehi Lagoon after capping the third day of competition with a perfect 17-0 record. Tufts came in second with a 13-4 record, Georgetown finished third with 12-5, and the College of Charleston ended the day in fourth place with an 8-9 record.
“I knew coming in we could win the regatta but we’re amazed that we went unscathed,” Harvard head coach Mike O’Connor said. “Our team depth really helped.”
Harvard team race coach Bern Noack added: “It was a lot closer than it looked. We had a lot of tough races that we won. When the tradewinds kicked in today it gave us an advantage with our bigger skippers.”
Senior Sean Doyle, juniors Clay Bischoff and Dan Litchfield, and sophomore Cardwell Potts skippered for Harvard, while juniors Michelle Yu, Laura Knoll, Gabe Dorfman and Lema Kikuchi, and senior Susan Bonney crewed.
Harvard defeated each of its 11 opponents in the first round-robin on Sunday and Monday, then went untouched during double round-robin action against the College of Charleston, Georgetown and Tufts on Tuesday. Defending champion Georgetown trailed Harvard by just one loss coming into the final day of competition, but went 2-4 on the final day, including losses in both races against Harvard and Tufts. Tufts put in a strong performance, going 4-2 on the final day to finish in second.
The competition continues with the ICSA/Gill North American Coed Dinghy Championship, June 5-7, at Keehi Lagoon. Eighteen teams, including the University of Hawai`i, will compete starting at noon tomorrow.
