HONOLULU — University of Hawai'I goalkeeper
Daisy Logtens was named the Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week on Wednesday after helping lead the second-ranked Rainbow Wahine to a runner-up finish in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational last weekend in Irvine, Calif.
The freshman from the Netherlands recorded 37 saves over four tournament matches to help UH finish 3-1 and post its highest finish in 17 appearances in the event. She is the fourth Rainbow Wahine to earn the Big West Player of the Week award this season, joining
Bia Mantellato Dias (Jan. 24),
Bernadette Doyle (Jan. 31) and
Lucia Gomez de la Puente (Feb. 7).
Logtens opened the Barbara Kalbus Invitational by posting five saves with an .833 save percentage while surrendering just one goal in a half of play in UH's 18-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Feb. 23.
In UH's first match the following day, she came up with seven saves and three steals in a 17-8 win over No. 12 Long Beach State to help the 'Bows advance to the semifinals. She then tied her season high with 15 saves (.714 save percentage) in a 10-7 win over No. 6 Cal. She posted 15 saves for the third time this season, matching her totals in wins over Michigan and USC and tying for the third highest single-game total in program history. Logtens closed the weekend with 10 saves and a steal against No. 1 UCLA in the tournament championship match.
Logtens ranks third in the Big West with 106 saves and leads the conference with a .596 save percentage.
UH's four Big West Player of the Week awards is the program's highest total since 2013. This season also marks the first time four different Rainbow Wahine players have been selected for the honor since UH joined the Big West in 2013.
The Rainbow Wahine (11-2) remain at No. 2 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Women's Varsity Top 25 for the fourth consecutive week. UH has wins over nine teams in the poll released on Wednesday — including seven of the top 10 — and both losses have come against No. 1 UCLA.
UH opens Big West play on March 8 at No. 16 UC Davis and will also face Cal again on March 10 during the Northern California road trip.
