BeachBows Start Strong On Opening Day Of AVCA Fall Nationals

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Hawai'i beach volleyball program began competition at the AVCA Fall Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship Friday at the John Hunt Park with both of UH's participating pairs moving on to this weekend's championship bracket.

A total of 64 pairs from across the country descended on Alabama for the third annual event and were broken up into 16 pools on the initial day. Among those pairs were two from UH – Alana Embry and Jasmine Jasmine Wandeler along with Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo.

Embry and Wandeler claimed their pool with quality wins over pairs from South Carolina and USC. After a three-set win in their opener versus South Carolina, the duo clinched the pool with an impressive 22-20, 21-14 win over Maya Gessner and Kaileigh Truslow of USC and punched their ticket to the 32-team championship bracket.

Embry and Wandeler will open bracket play Saturday morning against Demi Wagdy and Julia Westby of Long Beach State. First serve for that match is at 10:00 a.m. CST.

The pair of Burton and Lorenzo also advanced to the championship bracket, albeit with a longer route. The duo split action in pool play, falling in three sets to North Florida, before coming back and defeating the TCU duo of Maria Gonzalez and Hailey Hamlet, 22-20, 22-20. That set up a play-in to the championship bracket with Burton and Lorenzo earning the spot with a thrilling, 21-15, 17-21, 16-14 win over Pepperdine's Emma Eden and Mckenna Thomas.

Burton and Lorenzo move on to face Ashleigh Adams and Marketa Svozilova of Florida Atlantic in the championship bracket round of 32 Saturday at 9 a.m. CST.
